Upcoming Retreat Dates
Good at: Helping you to make your writing sparkle, and guiding you along the path to publication.
Emma is a writer and senior lecturer in Creative Writing at Bournemouth University. She has a BA(Hons) in English, and an MA in Creative & Critical Writing. She is also Editorial Director of Fresher, Bournemouth University's small independent publishing company that specialises in encouraging and promoting new writing talent, and runs the annual, international Fresher Writing Prize. Emma relaxes by walking the southwest coast path with family, friends and Hamish the Border terrier, and is constantly trying to find more time, space and peace to write women's fiction..
You will meet her at the writing retreats in Stanpit, Christchurch.
Good at: Helping with your enquiries, cooking and generally making your retreat experience run smoothly.
Simon has nearly 20 years experience in magazine publishing, working across household names such as Livingetc, Essentials, House Beautiful, Woman & Home and Coast. Eventually, however, the lure of the Dorset coastline proved too strong and he turned his back on London for a fresh start in the southwest. Simon relaxes by heading out to sea in his kayak, mountain biking, fishing and also by cooking for our guests.
You may talk to him when you make your booking, and see him with his apron on when you come to a weekend retreat.
Our Writing Workshop retreats are focussed on your writing, rather than listening to other authors speak about how they write. However, the Space to Write team is lucky enough to be supported and boosted by a wonderful range of authors, scriptwriters, poets, publishers and literary agents who occasionally visit us.
Retreats and Workshops
Our retreats are open to anyone, whether you are toying with the idea of a book or editing your completed manuscript.
Long Weekend Workshop Retreats run from Friday evening to Monday, providing you with the environment and peace to write, combined with a daily workshop with your fellow writers to help you gather constructive thoughts and feedback on your work. Click on Courses and Retreats for more information.
Our Writing Workshop retreats are held in Sandpipers, a light modern house, beautifully situated opposite Stanpit Nature reserve, on the edge of Christchurch Harbour, with Avon Beach and Mudeford Quay (with ferries to Mudeford sandspit and Hengistbury Head) just one mile's walk down the road. Also within walking distance is Christchurch itself, with its historic priory, beautiful Quay and various shops, cafes and bars.
Picturesque Halcyon Cottage, in West Lulworth, is also available to rent for personal writing retreats. Formerly the Women's Institute hall for the village, it now is a very comfortable cottage with a wood burning stove to keep it cosy in winter. When you need a break from writing, you can walk from the front door onto the cliffs above Lulworth Cove and to Durdle Door, or simply stroll down to the cove and pick up some fresh fish for supper. There are plenty of places to eat at the Cove, and The Castle, a famous thatched cider pub is just around the corner from the cottage also. It sleeps 5 (three bedrooms) with a downstairs double bedroom and shower room, and a Master, a twin and a bathroom upstairs. Please note though, that there are no desks in bedrooms, only the chunky pine table in the main living area, so if you want complete solitude to write, it's best to book it for yourself only, or with non-writing friends who are happy to walk cliffs and beaches while you work.
